APTEK has postulated, developed and successfully tested a technology to reduce the frictional component of drag imparted to a surface experiencing subsonic aerodynamic flow. The basic technology consists of a vibrating plate-such as the outer skin on an aircraft-which induces subacoustic pressure waves into the boundary layer of the aerodynamic flow. Data has been generated in 5 sets of wind tunnel tests utilizing direct drag reduction measurements (drag plate), Preston tubes, flying pitot, hot wires and flow visualization.
